MyZTEN · Guide

Connect Zerodha,
step by step.

Every click, in order. Pick where you're doing it: on a computer or on a phone.

Before you start

  • Only for live trading. Paper trading in MyZTEN needs none of this. Skip this page if you only trade on paper.
  • Your Zerodha client ID, like AB1234. It is at the top right of Kite on the web, and under your name in the Kite app.
  • The Kite app on your phone, logged in. Zerodha's login asks for a 6-digit App code, and that code appears in the Kite app.
  • About 10 minutes, once. After that, live trading needs one Zerodha login a day, which takes under a minute.

Part 1 · Make your free Kite Connect app (once)

  1. Open MyZTEN. Go to my.zten.in, sign in, open Profile and click Connect Zerodha. Click Next until you reach step 3, Create your free Kite Connect app. Keep this tab open: you'll come back to it.
  2. Open the Kite developer site. Click Open developers.kite.trade. It opens in a new tab.
  3. Sign up there, if you haven't before. Click Sign up and fill in your name, email, phone and password. Use the same email and phone as your Zerodha account. This is a separate account from Kite: your Zerodha password does not work here. Verify your email, then sign in.
  4. Create the app. Go to My apps and click Create new app. Choose Personal. It is free.
  5. Fill in the form. In the MyZTEN tab, each value has a Copy button. Copy it, switch to the developer tab, click in the box and paste (Ctrl+V, or ⌘+V on a Mac).
    • App name: MyZTEN- followed by your client ID, e.g. MyZTEN-AB1234
    • Zerodha client ID: yours, e.g. AB1234
    • Redirect URL: https://my.zten.in/api/kite/callback. Exactly this, with nothing added or missing.
    • Postback URL: leave it empty
    • Description: MyZTEN Setup
    Click Create.
  6. Find your key and secret. Open the app you just made. It shows an API key and an API secret (click Show to see the secret). Leave this tab open.

Part 2 · Give MyZTEN the key and secret (once)

  1. Paste them into MyZTEN. Go back to the MyZTEN tab and click Next. Copy the API key from the developer tab and paste it into API key. Do the same for the API secret. Click Save.

Part 3 · Log in to Zerodha (each day you trade live)

  1. Click Log in to Zerodha in MyZTEN. On later days, find it on Profile. Zerodha's own login page opens.
  2. Type your Zerodha user ID and password and click Login. These go to Zerodha only; MyZTEN never sees them.
  3. Get the App code from your phone. Zerodha now asks for an App code. Pick up your phone and open the Kite app. The 6-digit code pops up there; unlock with your fingerprint or face if it asks. Type the code on your computer and click Continue.

The code changes every 30 seconds. If it changes while you type, use the new one. You have 5 minutes after your password to enter it. If you use an authenticator app for Zerodha instead, type its code.

  4. You're back in MyZTEN. Profile shows your Zerodha client ID and funds. That's it until tomorrow.

Tip: Part 1 is easier on a computer. The Kite developer site is made for big screens. Do Part 1 and Part 2 once on a computer if you can; the daily login in Part 3 is easy on a phone.

Part 1 · Make your free Kite Connect app (once)

  1. Open MyZTEN in your phone's browser. Chrome on Android, Safari on iPhone. Go to my.zten.in, sign in, tap Profile, then Connect Zerodha. Tap Next until step 3, Create your free Kite Connect app.
  2. Open the Kite developer site. Tap Open developers.kite.trade. It opens in a new browser tab. You now have two tabs: MyZTEN and the developer site. Switch between them with the tabs button in your browser (the square with a number in it).
  3. Sign up there, if you haven't before. Tap Sign up and fill in your name, email, phone and password. Use the same email and phone as your Zerodha account. This is a separate account from Kite: your Zerodha password does not work here. Verify your email, then sign in. If the page looks tiny, pinch to zoom or turn your phone sideways.
  4. Create the app. Go to My apps and tap Create new app. Choose Personal. It is free.
  5. Fill in the form, one box at a time. In the MyZTEN tab, tap Copy next to a value. Switch to the developer tab, press and hold inside the box, and tap Paste. Repeat for each box:
    • App name: MyZTEN- followed by your client ID, e.g. MyZTEN-AB1234
    • Zerodha client ID: yours, e.g. AB1234
    • Redirect URL: https://my.zten.in/api/kite/callback. Exactly this, with nothing added or missing.
    • Postback URL: leave it empty
    • Description: MyZTEN Setup
    Tap Create.
  6. Find your key and secret. Open the app you just made. It shows an API key and an API secret (tap Show to see the secret).

Part 2 · Give MyZTEN the key and secret (once)

  1. Copy the key. On the developer tab, press and hold the API key until it is selected, then tap Copy.
  2. Paste it into MyZTEN. Switch to the MyZTEN tab and tap Next. Press and hold in the API key box and tap Paste.
  3. Same for the secret. Copy the API secret from the developer tab and paste it into the API secret box. Tap Save.

Part 3 · Log in to Zerodha (each day you trade live)

Read this first. The login opens in your browser, not in the Kite app. That is normal. Being logged in to the Kite app does not log you in here: the browser needs its own Zerodha login. You use the Kite app only to get the 6-digit App code.

  1. Tap Log in to Zerodha in MyZTEN. On later days, find it on Profile. Zerodha's login page opens in your browser.
  2. Type your Zerodha user ID and password and tap Login. These go to Zerodha only; MyZTEN never sees them.
  3. Zerodha asks for an App code. Don't close the browser. Leave the page as it is.
  4. Open the Kite app. Swipe up from the bottom (or press the home button) and tap the Kite app. The 6-digit App code pops up there; unlock with your fingerprint or face if it asks. Remember the 6 digits.
  5. Go back to the browser. Open your recent apps (swipe up and hold, or press the square button on Android) and tap your browser. The Zerodha page is still waiting. Type the code and tap Continue.

The code changes every 30 seconds. If it changed before you typed it, go back to Kite and use the new one. You have 5 minutes after your password to enter it. If you use an authenticator app for Zerodha instead, use its code.

  6. You're back in MyZTEN. Profile shows your Zerodha client ID and funds. That's it until tomorrow.

If something goes wrong

"Invalid App code"

Wait for the next code and type it quickly. If it keeps failing, your phone's clock may be off: in your phone's Settings, open Date & time and turn on automatic (network) time.

No App code in the Kite app

Make sure you are logged in to the Kite app on your phone. If the code still doesn't show, tap Problem with Mobile App Code? on Zerodha's page to get a code by SMS or email instead.

An error about the redirect URL

The Redirect URL in your app must be exactly https://my.zten.in/api/kite/callback. Open your app on developers.kite.trade, fix it, save, and try again.

"Invalid api_key" or an error about the key or checksum

The key or secret was copied wrong, often with a space at the end. In MyZTEN open Profile, choose Disconnect, then Connect Zerodha again and paste both once more.

It logged in to a different Zerodha account

Your browser was already signed in to another Zerodha account. Sign out at kite.zerodha.com in this browser, or use a private (incognito) window, and log in with the account you made the app with.

It took too long and Zerodha started over

You have 5 minutes between your password and the App code. Go back to MyZTEN and tap Log in to Zerodha again.

Why every day?

SEBI requires a fresh login to Zerodha each trading day, and the login ends at 6:00 am the next morning. MyZTEN reminds you on live trading days if you haven't logged in. More in Zerodha and your account.
